What Is a Crown Molding Spring Angle?

The crown molding spring angle is the angle at which the molding sits against the wall when installed between the wall and ceiling. Knowing this angle is important when determining the correct miter and bevel settings for cutting crown molding.

Common crown molding profiles typically use 38°, 45° or 52° spring angles. For example, you may see molding described as 38°/52° or 45°/45° crown. However, older molding, custom profiles and decorative trim may use different angles.

The spring angle should not be confused with the corner angle of the room. The corner angle describes where two walls meet, while the spring angle describes the installed position of the crown molding itself.

When cutting crown molding flat on a compound miter saw, both the wall angle and crown spring angle are used to determine the proper miter and bevel settings.

How to Find the Spring Angle of Crown Molding

If you know the specifications of your crown molding, you can select its spring angle directly in the calculator. If you don't know the spring angle, measure the crown in its installed position.

First, measure the wall drop from the ceiling down to the bottom edge of the crown molding. Next, measure the ceiling projection from the wall outward to where the crown meets the ceiling.
